Worst Paralegal Advice I’ve Ever Been Given
1st Job
I was so blessed to land where I did in my first job. The Paralegal on staff had a close working relationship with two of the founding partners and they had just brought on a third attorney. They hired me to work as a Legal Secretary, Receptionist, File Clerk & all around errand runner. What was amazing was that the Paralegal took time out of her day to answer questions, provide me with advice and more. To say this type of support is rare in the legal field is an understatement.
One statement she made to me, however, was simply not true. She advised I would have to wait 10 years to achieve the title of “Paralegal”. Not only was it not true, the fact is – I was able to land a Paralegal position with a personal injury attorney within 7 months. Her advice was to stay in one position and to take classes when I was able to. While that was definitely an option, I had a fast track approach in mind instead.
If you’re just beginning your Paralegal Career, be careful who you listen to. Perhaps you’re entering the field right now for the very first time. If so, congratulations! You’re on your way. The best piece of advice I can give you is to learn all you can and to track everything you learn in a notebook so that you can refer back to it.
Never let anyone paint you into a corner or set limits to your dream. You’re following your purpose – there are no limitations!
