Best Advice I’ve Ever Received as a Paralegal
What was it?
Become an expert in every thing you do in the office whether it be Microsoft Word or research. Use Google as one of your most important resources to learn from, or even YouTube when you need to brush up on or become an expert in Microsoft Word.
You see, what I saw in many private law firms were staffers who simply had no interest in the work. It was just a 9-5 job to them. What I decided to do instead was to view this as a career.
In the beginning of my Paralegal career, I was seriously lacking in word processing skills. Most of the law firms were using WordPerfect at that time and I frankly had a very hard time understanding it. To fix this, I took a night class in WordPerfect to speed my progress up a bit and it worked!
Put a little money aside from every paycheck for your education fund. In the beginning, I attended in-person seminars to add to my knowledge base. Later, of course, many classes became available online. My favorite go-to resource for online webinars is a company called NBI-Sems (National Business Institute Seminars – Paralegal Division).
Did I pay for most of the classes myself? You bet I did. Invest in yourself along the way. It’s important to understand that you are building a wonderful, flexible career for yourself.
The Paralegal Career is flexible in that you can move from state to state and find employment (I’ve done it & so can you!). The more you learn about many areas of law, the more well-rounded you will be.
